Every Market Is a Niche Market

A few days ago, Rick K. posted the following question on the Friends In Business Board:

"I'm currently trying to write sales copy for a website I'm building, and I need a Woman's perspective...

"You walk into a meeting, gathering, church, or wherever. You're dressed in your very best "Sunday-go-to-meeting" clothes. You're looking good, feeling very sharp.

"THEN, a woman walks in wearing the SAME IDENTICAL OUTFIT.

"Question 1.) How does this make you feel?

"Question 2.) Why?...

"Would this 'identical outfit' example extend into other areas, such as a woman having the same furniture that you do? Or paint her house the same color as yours?

"I guess I'm trying to find out where female rivalaries extend. Clothes, yes. But where else?"

Well, we all chimed in with our opinions, but only Mel. White came through with some really meaty stuff of the "grad-school marketing" variety.

Business Suicide

What a great thread this is, especially the three-part story about the mechanics who passed up every chance to effectively sell their services.

This really hits home for me.  My medical transcription business paid the bills (usually), but I shudder to think how successful I could have been if I had made even one change; for example, following one successful lady's advice to "tell everyone what you do" (I never told anyone unless they asked).

Complain, Complain, Complain

Funny I should stumble on an article called Escape the Culture of Complaint this morning..

I'm going through a messy situation in my own life -- one which has yanked the mortgage and insurance money right out from under me -- and it stems, I believe, from The Culture of Complaint, The Culture of Me, and The Culture of Life Ain't Fair.

For 23 years I ran a reasonably successful medical transcription service.  There were lots of ups and downs, and many times I had to solicit new business (which I absolutely hated, but by God I did it because I wasn't going to let my business go down the toilet).  I sold the business (on a four-year installment plan) to a lady who had worked for me for almost the entire time (and who also happened to be my best friend).

I should have known better, because her favorite line is, "That's not fair."

She lost an account that I happened to work on, so I lost 3/4 of my income right there.  It wasn't her fault (or mine); she was undercut, plain and simple.

I like to look for the silver lining, so I saw it as an opportunity to do what I had lusted after for seven years -- work on the internet full time.  I haven't seen the money yet, but I'm having great fun and I'm very optimistic.

Okay so far.

Unfortunately, the $500 monthly payment on the business stopped too -- with no warning or direct confrontation.  I finally dragged it out of her.  It seems she has decided (surprise!) "it isn't fair" that she has to pay the same amount for the business because she lost this client a year and a half after taking over!!  She wants me to compensate her to the tune of a $5,000 reduction in price.

Could she build the business back up and then some?  Of course she could!

Instead, she chooses to focus on what she lost, on the fact that she hates soliciting (join the club!), on the fact that lots of doctors are looking at voice recognition (which will blow traditional medical transcription out of the water eventually, except those who are smart enough to find their new role in the field), on the fact that "it wasn't her fault" (she's decided it was mine), and on the fact that "it isn't fair."

This puts us both in the crapper.

I should have known better.

The kind of moan-and-groan attitude my former best friend is famous for just doesn't cut it when you're in business for yourself.  There are going to be good times and bad times, and if you don't have what it takes to survive the bad times, you're better off with 9-to-5 JOB where there's someone to direct you and force you to keep going or get canned.

IMHO, if you're a card-carrying member of the Culture of Complaint, you aren't entrepreneur material.

MaaMaw

RATS!!  I can't even have a "Whoa Doggy!" moment and get it right!  Oh well, I've learned something new in the process, so all is not lost.

Bloggers... 7 Practical Sales Tactics

Well, maybe six, since we're about to pick one apart.

They come from "7 Practical Tactics to Turn Your Blog Into a Sales Machine" from a site called MarketingSherpa, but I like what Des Walsh has to say about the article, so we're getting there by way of his "Thinking Home Business" blog.

I'm no expert, but I agree with Des's views on blogging less than daily.  When I was out of town recently, struggling with a rotten connection in a rotten motel, I didn't blog for a couple of days, and my traffic took a nosedive.  With a bzillion blogs out there -- many of them deserted -- I expect people would move on very quickly.

In my short experience, I have learned "daily" is everything (but you'll excuse me if I miss one here and there?).

Profitable Niche Sites... The Next Lesson

Have I told you before how much I love Mike Long's blog on building profitable niche sites?  (I thought so.)

Ohmigawd, now he's giving homework!  Can you think of a better way to stay on track?

Here's the next installment:  Let's Start Preparing to Build a Site!!

And the next:  Learning the Art of Niche

I haven't had a chance to sit down and really soak these lessons up yet so I might have missed it, but one thing really concerns me every time I read the word "niche."  If I take all the stuff I'm an expert on and lay it out toe to toe, it fills about 3 inches.  Add to that the stuff I know a lot about though I'm not really an expert and you fill the shoe but not much more.

Does one have to actually know something about one's niche(s)?

Newbies... One Guy's Bad Experience

Kiddies, this tale of woe happens to refer to Emerald Passport.  It could be any one of a bzillion "opportunities."

They all promise to lead you to financial independence and Porsches and Villas on the Italian Riviera.  They're more likely to lead you straight to bankruptcy court.

Don't dismiss this guy's friend as stupid.  His lesson has been pretty cheap so far, and his failure to see the light is very typical.  Let's just hope they don't soak him for another few thousand before he gets out.

There are three HUGE red flags here (lots more than three really, but three that are easy for anyone to spot, even if you're still wet behind the ears):

They claim they use private couriers for speed and safety, but that's almost *always* a tip-off that they're trying to avoid U.S. Postal Authorities.

They claim they aren't MLM.  That's a favorite... but if your sales are feeding an upline in any way (regardless of the latest twist on the pay plan), you can be darn sure it's MLM.  (That isn't to say every MLM on the planet is bad, but if they claim they aren't and they are, you've got a problem.)

They claim to be direct sales, selling their product to the general public.  It isn't too hard to figure out that "the general public" isn't going to spend $1295 or $1395 on a "self-improvement product" (for the most part), and the only people buying are people who want to use the product to make money; i.e., that makes the dealer the customer.

I could have saved almost $30,000 if I'd had the smarts to listen to the many people who warned me.  They pointed out oddities all over the place, but I knew better.

Don't be a knucklehead.  If there is any little niggling doubt at all, run screaming into the sunset and wait patiently til the company collapses (or gets escorted offstage by the feds).

Your Blog = Your Personal Brand

Alas, I discovered another irresistible blog (and I hated blogs just one short month ago?).  This one is What's Your Brand Mantra? by Jennifer Rice.

I owe my discovery to this article at Blog Business World.  It caught my eye because I'm having a hard time adjusting to the idea of linking to oodles of other blogs.  It's becoming obvious to me that this is "the thing to do" in blogging circles, but I've been ignoring requests for "reciprocal links" for years, and it's hard to break old habits.

News Flash:  I don't have to!

According to Jennifer, you need to establish a linking policy.  No need to swap links with everybody and their grandma.  Link only to blogs that complement yours and, in essence, make you look good.  Read more here.
